"One Hundred Things to Rejoice About" - A Journal Prompt
I want to dedicate an entry to rejoicing--from the littlest things to the big, happy things--the reasons why we keep going, even when it's hard. (Things have been hard, lately.)
100 Things to Rejoice About:
- The smell of just-about-to-rain: apparently doesn't occur in places without humidity. My 4, 8 and 8 year old cousins in San Fran had never smelled just-about-to-rain until they came to visit two and a half weeks ago
- Popham Beach
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- The Portland Museum of Art
- Chris Cornell
- The 50% off clearance sale at Old Navy (especially because I get another 20% off of that)
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
- Wine from Spain
- Very Sexy Bras from Vickies
- My dog Daisy
- Tetris
- Matt Damon: even though he's cheesy, he's still not as cheesy as Ben Affleck and much hotter
- The Boston Public Garden and Boston Common
- Martinis from the top of the Eastland
- Snood
- Snorkeling in Bermuda
- On Point with Tom Ashbrook: many thanks especially to Hilary for her production efforts
- The Museum of Fine Arts
- Flip flops
- Colin Firth
- The tropical fish of the Caribbean
- Swimming pools
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
- Going to the Maine oceanside with people from the Midwest: like being an ambassador to the beach. "That's a Razor Clam. That's a mussel shell. They're delicious. Like chicken, only better."
- Buddhism
- 30 Rock: It's on right now. Every time I see it, I just think "Oh sh*t, is this show funny!"
- Butterflies
- Cook's on Orr's Island
- The lovely array of flat shoes they're designing these days
- Super strong magnets: I bought three from Red Dragon for Cecilia's Fourth Birthday Magical Box of Things. They're magic. When you put one in the palm of your hand and then stick the other two under your hand at the same polarities, it flips the magnet over in your hand. Like magic. Cecilia and I were impressed with our magicalness.
- Speaking of magic, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is next on the list
- The fact that every turn on the roads of Maine yields a pretty view.
- The 1989 black Caprice Classic I saw in Dorchester today that was awesome on its own (mint condition) but was awesomer because it had a UMaine Black Bear Maine license plate.
- The architecture of Lewiston Maine's old buildings
- Flamingos
- All My Children
- Especially Erika Kane's flawless face due to innumerable injections of Botox
- My cat, Oliver: Sir Oliver the Lilshed Crookshanks Milo Madden the III, Esquire (see the very bottom of this blog for a photo of his best work as a lilshed)
- Sleeping Beauty
- Modern interpretative dance performed by a charmingly precocious 4 year old whilst singing "Once Upon a Dream" for a quarter from her mom: best show I've seen in years
- One Life to Live
- David Ortiz's smile
- The fact that David Ortiz, a native Spanish speaker from the Dominican Republic, is easier to understand than Mayor Menino of Boston in those anti-violence PSAs aired on NESN.
- Microbrews, particularly Gritty's
- The color fuschia
- Sushi, especially spicy tuna
- Marden's and its snappy, straightforward slogan: "I shoulda bought it when I saw it at Mardens!"
- Lobster claws
- Cracking open a lobster claw and getting the white stuff splattered all over your hair, face, glasses and even getting a bit of a pearl necklace, lobster-style
- Irish jokes
- Soap Net
- Fresh Air with Terry Gross
- All shades of purple
- Ikea (I almost forgot that one!)
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
- Bart and Greg's
- Little Homeys and other tiny toys that amuse people of all ages: when I taught "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Odyssey", classes met every other days so I had to revive their memories of what we'd studied the class before. I did it in three minutes at the beginning of class with "Little Homey Theatre." I took my little pencil case box of Little Homeys and other tiny toys with mermaids, animals, figurines, etc. and recreated the plot lines from the last class. It was fun. Plus, they remembered.
